Welcome To Southern King Shepherds
Southern King Shepherds is located in Texas about 1 ½ hours outside of Dallas. We are situated on sixty
acres that are shared with eight King Shepherds, a flock of Shetland sheep, donkeys, registered polled Hereford
cattle, three house cats, three kids and a husband. I have been involved with the King Shepherd breed for the past
several years. I am an AKSC (American King Shepherd Club) Active Club Member, and I am the southern director for the
club.
I became interested in these amazing dogs after the loss of my German Shepherd, Butcho. I had
rescued him as a puppy and he shared his life with our family.
When he passed away, we needed a dog to watch after the animals, our stuff, and the kids. I had wanted another shepherd
but could not find another GSD to fit the bill. Most of the dogs I found were neurotic, overly driven, shy, or aggressive.
Some dogs were horribly over angulated and physically unimpressive. I found some well-bred, balanced, German Shepherds;
however, they were a fraction of the size of Butcho. As I looked for a strong, rugged, loyal guard dog, I found the
King Shepherd. I am proud to be involved in the development of such a magnificent breed. It is my goal to produce
puppies that are healthy, sound, and exude that very special King Shepherd type. Producing physically healthy dogs is
paramount at Southern Kings therefore; all breeding animals have the necessary health screenings performed prior to being
mated. The breed is relatively healthy and doesn’t have many issues to test for, but breeding animals must have
OFA or PENNHIP certification of hips, and a complete blood profile to check for metabolic anomalies or infection.
The King has a distinct personality marked by direct and fearless, but not hostile, expression, self-confidence
and a certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. The dog must not be timid
or nervous. Lack of confidence under any surroundings is not typical of sound King Shepherd temperament. The ideal
dog is a working animal with an incorruptible character. Any animal not fully representing these characteristics is
not used in my breeding program.
In addition, a King would just be a shepherd if it
did not exude that very special King Shepherd type. The King possesses size; thick, dense bone; a well-muscled torso and a
strong impressive head. He is large, rugged, powerful and impressive, possessing great endurance and agility.
He is a working guard dog without equal.
